About Meinklang

Area: 2,500 ha total (75 ha of vineyards, spread across Austria and Hungary).
Certification: Biodynamic since 2001, organic since the 1980s, natural wine since 2011.

Philosophy and management

The biodynamic family business Meinklang ("My Harmony") is run by the Michlits family, with centuries of roots in Burgenland. Three brothers cooperatively manage the livestock, agriculture, and viticulture divisions – independently yet symbiotically. Manure from the livestock fertilizes the vineyards, and their own grains feed the cattle. At its core is a holistic philosophy: the vineyards are living organisms where natural processes dominate, without synthetic chemicals.

The vineyards: biodiversity at scale

Besides vineyards, the estate includes meadows, "sacred land" (untouched nature), grain fields, vegetable gardens, and forests. Unique to Meinklang:

  • A 2,500-hectare biodynamic ecosystem – rare on this scale.

  • Conscious biodiversity: native plants (clover, vetch, wild grasses) and natural ponds promote ecological balance. This "gentle competition" with the vines enhances the aromatic richness of the grapes.

  • Fertilization with homemade compost (manure, grape skins, limestone).

Cellar and wine production

  • Natural process: Spontaneous fermentation, minimal to no sulphur, malolactic fermentation at its own pace.

  • Innovation: Gravity-driven (no pumps) and the use of concrete eggs—self-cast according to biodynamic principles. These egg-shaped vessels:

    • Ensures micro-oxidation through porous concrete (no wood taste).

    • Stabilize temperature and promote circulation thanks to the golden ratio shape.
